Will testing damage the jewelry?
XRF is completely non-destructive — it reads the surface with X-ray fluorescence. Electronic pen testers like the AuRACLE Pro only require touching the probe to a small filed spot on the piece.
Can these testers catch gold-plated or gold-filled fakes?
Yes. The AuRACLE Pro identifies non-gold, gold plate, and gold-filled items as NA. The GemOro XRF goes further: it measures 10–20 microns deep — roughly five times the thickness of typical gold plating — and includes a dedicated plating warning feature.
How is XRF different from an acid test or electronic tester?
Acid kits and pen testers confirm karat range. XRF measures the actual percentage of each element in the alloy (gold, platinum, silver, palladium, rhodium, and 19 more) — the modern, non-destructive alternative to a fire assay.
Do the testers need calibration?
The AuRACLE Pro uses easy one-step calibration with an 18K gold reference — grab the 18K Plumb Gold Calibration Disc above. The XRF ships with a 316 stainless calibration shutter, so you can verify calibration yourself without sending the unit in.
Anything to know before buying an XRF?
Each state has its own requirements for owning an X-ray emitting device — you'll register your XRF with your state's Department of Health. And note that XRF is a surface measurement; for core samples, a fire assay remains the lab standard.
